SCENE QUEEN - METALICIOUS
For the last few years, SCENE QUEEN has been breaking the mould of what most people expect from metal. In a male-dominated industry where subgenres are taken incredibly seriously, and with the constant questioning of “what or who is metal enough?”, Hannah Collins has kicked the door down and introduced us to “bimbocore”. Yes, there’s pink. Yes, there’s glitter and rhinestones. But on METALICIOUS, there are also some of the heaviest, most guttural vocals you’ll hear.
After a captivating and bold set at Download Festival that gained her plenty of new ears, SCENE QUEEN is back with a new EP, METALICIOUS. In true SCENE QUEEN fashion, it’s packed with humour, fun and a big “fuck you” to the patriarchy.
The seven-track EP opens with the short but sweet ‘Pink Flip Phone’, a bombastic introduction packed with Y2K nostalgia. It sets the tone immediately: playful, unapologetic and completely unafraid of leaning into the aesthetics that make SCENE QUEEN so distinctive.
‘Manicure’ perfectly showcases SCENE QUEEN’s ability to swing from one extreme to the other, moving from clean vocals into guttural growls without warning. That contrast is one of the EP’s biggest strengths, proving that the hyper-feminine aesthetic isn’t at odds with the heaviness of the music.
Revenge is served sweet on ‘Shopaholic’, which arguably features some of the cleanest vocals we’ve heard from SCENE QUEEN to date. The EP then switches things up with ‘Drop Dead Gorgeous’, a very Ke$ha-coded collaboration with TX2. With one of the catchiest riffs on the record, the track feels like a throwback to the scene-kid music that dominated MySpace in the late 2000s all while still carrying SCENE QUEEN’s signature tongue-in-cheek attitude.
‘Tracksuit’ is another humorously aggressive addition, once again combining themes of revenge and Y2K nostalgia. Referencing the iconic pink velour Juicy Couture tracksuit, the imagery feels almost hilariously contradictory when paired with some of the heaviest vocals on the EP. And that contradiction is exactly what makes it work.
‘T!ts Out At Brunch’ is perhaps the weaker point of the EP, although it still brings some brilliant double-kick drums and plenty of the attitude we’ve come to expect from SCENE QUEEN.
Closing the EP is the title track, ‘METALICIOUS’, featuring deathcore heavyweights Left to Suffer. It’s a suitably chaotic way to bring the record to a close, leaning fully into the heavier side of “bimbocore” and demonstrating just how far SCENE QUEEN can push the concept.
Overall, METALICIOUS is a solid release, perhaps a perfect gateway if you are new to the world of bimbocore. There are some catchy moments and earworms that will definitely be able to open up a “twerkle pit”.
